Over 35% of the world’s seafood production is consumed by China’s 1.5 billion population whose average per capita consumption is set to rise to 39kg by 2020.
From 2006-2011, added-value seafood sales rose by almost 9% and online seafood sales are predicted to increase by up to 300% (2016 & 2017) of which 80-90% from the frozen category, according to Bord Bia, Ireland’s Food Board.
Irish seafood (oysters, mussels and shellfish) export value to China increased by 32% in 2016 to €25m. Shellfish exports exceeded €14m in value, representing a 55% increase on 2015.
