Funding for State harbours is “essential” to the wellbeing of rural coastal communities, remarked Michael Creed, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

The programme plays an “important social and economic role” in their respective localities by contributing to fishing and aquaculture-related activities, increasing participation in marine leisure and augmenting measures to attract greater numbers of tourists all of which generate an environment for job creation,” he added.

The local authority programme forms part of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s 2018 Fishery Harbour and Coatal Insfrastructure Development Programme whereby the department co-funds up to 75% of the total cost of approved capital projects with the LA providing the balance.
