A €2.2m fund will assist development, maintenance and repair at 39 harbours and slipways under the control of twelve coastal local authorities.
The programme (2019 Fishery and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme – DAFM) funds up to 75% of the project cost and the LA provides the balance.
These harbours play a “critical role” in the social and economic well-being of rural coastal communities, remarked Minister Michael Creed.
In addition to an “immediate employment spin-off during the works” this funding contributes to ongoing development of fishing-related activities, he added.
The funding will also enable greater participation in marine leisure and supplement measures “to attract greater numbers of tourists which ultimately create the environment for sustainable job creation opportunities in rural locations” he noted.
